Root Canals

Certain teeth are damaged or decayed to the point that they cannot be returned to full functionality with a basic filling. If necessary, our dentist in Eugene, Oregon will remove the flawed tooth. However, if it is possible to restore the tooth, we will do exactly that. Root canal treatment typically takes two or more appointments. The dentist might take x-rays of the tooth in question prior to performing the root canal. The x-rays make it that much easier to obtain a clear image of the root canal and gauge the amount of damage. The root canal treatment procedure will be performed with the use of a local anesthetic to numb the gum around the tooth as well as the tooth. The dentist then proceeds to remove the tooth’s pulp. A dental dam consisting of rubber is positioned around the tooth so it stays dry and also so you do not swallow during the procedure.

The tooth is opened through its crown. The dentist accesses the soft tissue within the tooth’s center. Infected pulp within the tooth is then removed. If the dentist finds a dental abscess, it will be drained. The root canal is then cleaned and enlarged. Small files are necessary to increase the size of the canal and improve their shape prior to the filling. It might be necessary to return to the dentist for a subsequent visit for this component of root canal treatment. The more roots there are within the tooth, the longer the process will take. If a temporary filling is used between visits, it will be removed so the root canal filling can be placed. The tooth is sealed to ward off subsequent infection. If the dentist believes a crown will be necessary to safeguard the tooth, it will be added.
